What we've accomplished

Saving money for taxpayers

Through the correction of locally filed Virginia income tax returns, my staff and I have saved James City County residents well over $1 million in state income taxes.

Helping new taxpayers file returns

In conjunction with AARP and TaxAide volunteer tax preparation groups, I have prepared numerous part-year tax returns for new residents of the area.  These have resulted in my  preparation of part-year returns for at least 30 other states as well

Providing tax relief during inflation

By working with the James City County  Board of Supervisors, we were able to provide significant personal property tax relief to county residents in 2022.  By making an adjustment to our valuation ration for that year from 100 percent to 75 percent, we offset the spike in motor vehicle prices, resulting in a tax savings of nearly $9 million.

Working with county officials

We have maintained open communication and cooperation in county departments and provided them with much needed statistical information to make informed decisions while protecting the individual confidential information we collect for tax purposes.

Making our office more efficient

We have made the best possible use of technology to perform the duties of the office through the near doubling of our population during my 24 years of service as Commissioner without increasing staffing.
